From the moment I was there, I felt like an inconvenience to the staff rather than a child who deserved to be looked after. That feeling has never fully left me.
I was hungry constantly. Food was used as a form of punishment, and I was so frightened of the staff that I was scared to ask for anything to eat. The hunger became so severe that I was eating toothpaste just to try and fill that emptiness. I was also severely dehydrated and was not given water as I needed it. For a child to be in that state — hungry, thirsty, and too afraid to ask for basic necessities — is something that should never have been allowed to happen.
The staff were deeply intimidating, and I was genuinely scared of them. I was constantly criticised, humiliated, and belittled. I was ignored and isolated, and there was absolutely no support offered to me at any point. I spent my time walking on eggshells, never knowing what might result in punishment, and always feeling as though my presence was unwelcome and burdensome.
I was not permitted to make friends, which left me feeling profoundly alone. Human connection is something every child needs, and it was deliberately denied to me. The isolation I felt inside that home was total.
I was always cold. There was no heating, and my clothes were never washed. The consequence of this followed me beyond the walls of the home, as I was bullied at school because of it. The neglect I suffered did not stay behind closed doors — it affected every part of my life, including what should have been a safe and normal part of childhood.
I believe I may have been physically struck on occasions, but I have blocked much of it out. The mind sometimes protects itself from what is too painful to fully hold, and I accept that there are parts of my time there that I may never be able to fully recall or process.
I also have reason to believe that sexual assaults were taking place within that home. I remember being very scared, and that fear has embedded itself in me in ways I am still trying to understand. I want this recorded, even though it is one of the most difficult things to put into words.
Throughout my entire time there, I received no help whatsoever. The impact of that neglect and abuse has followed me into adulthood and has affected every area of my life. My nervous system has been deeply affected by what I went through. I would become overwhelmed with grief seeing families together, knowing that the warmth and safety of a loving home was something I was being denied. The staff made those feelings even worse rather than offering any comfort.
I now struggle to trust people. I suffer from depression, PTSD, and anxiety, and I have been on medication as a result. My confidence has been severely damaged, and that has affected my whole life — my relationships, my sense of self, and my ability to feel safe in the world. These are not small things. They are the lasting consequences of years spent in an environment where I was neglected, frightened, isolated, and mistreated at a time when I was most vulnerable and most in need of genuine care.

It was a mixed unit, with children younger than me and others up to around sixteen or seventeen years old. Because of the wide age range, there was a lot of bullying happening between all the different groups. I was bullied regularly, and I remember trying to stay out of the unit as much as I possibly could just to avoid the constant intimidation.

The staff turned a complete blind eye to everything that was happening. They neglected me and the other children who were being targeted. I was called names, pushed around, and beaten up more than once. I remember being beaten black and blue, and even then, nothing was done about it. The staff had their favourites, and if those children were bullying someone, the staff would ignore it or sometimes even encourage it. It made me feel completely unprotected and alone.

There were also times when the staff restrained me, but it wasn’t proper restraint. They would twist my arm up my back, pin me down, and use unnecessary force. It felt more like punishment than anything meant to keep anyone safe. Some of the staff members made me feel very uneasy — their behaviour was shady, and I didn’t trust them at all.

All of this has had a lasting effect on my mental health. The bullying, the neglect, the physical force, and the feeling of having no one to turn to have stayed with me. My time at Carluke should have been a place where I was supported and cared for, but instead it became another environment where I felt unsafe, overlooked, and deeply affected by the way I was treated.","supporting_documents":"collecting","setting_1_persons_involved":null}

Those years were some of the most traumatic of my life. Instead of being cared for or supported, I was subjected to constant fear, cruelty, and abuse from the staff who were supposed to protect us. I was still just a child when I arrived, and I had no idea how badly things would unfold.

During my time there, I was sexually abused by staff members. They did horrible things to me, and I felt completely powerless to stop it. I didn’t understand why the people who were meant to look after us were the ones causing so much harm. It left me feeling confused, ashamed, and terrified. I carried that fear with me every single day.

There was a period when they locked me in a room for two weeks straight. I wasn’t fed properly during that time — just tiny amounts of water and bits of bread. I remember feeling weak, hungry, and completely forgotten about. It was like I didn’t exist. Being shut away like that, with no one to help me, made me feel hopeless and alone.

The physical abuse was constant. They would hit me, slap me, and beat us up for no reason at all. It didn’t matter what we did — even if we tried to follow the rules — they always found an excuse to hurt us. We lived in fear of the next outburst, the next punishment, the next moment when someone would decide to take their anger out on us.

We weren’t allowed to speak to social workers about what was happening. If we even tried to say something, we knew we would be punished. The staff made it clear that if we spoke up, things would get even worse. That fear kept all of us silent. We were trapped in a place where the truth couldn’t be told.

One of the worst things I witnessed was when they forced a girl’s head down the toilet. Seeing that happen to someone else showed me just how cruel and heartless they could be. It wasn’t just me suffering — it was all of us.

Looking back, those years shaped me in ways I’m still trying to understand. I was a child living in constant fear, neglected and abused by the very people who were supposed to care for me. During my time living at this facility, I was subjected to repeated and serious abuse by a member of staff named Wilf Egdol. The abuse occurred on multiple occasions and had a profound and lasting impact on my physical and psychological wellbeing. While under the care of Creagdhu, I was in a vulnerable position and dependent on staff for support and safety. Mr Egdol exploited this imbalance of power and authority. He sexually assaulted me on more than one occasion, including forcing me to perform oral sexual acts against my will. These acts were non-consensual and coercive, and I did not have the ability or freedom to refuse or remove myself from the situation without fear of repercussions.
In addition to the sexual abuse, Mr Egdol also subjected me to physical violence. He struck me on multiple occasions, causing pain and fear. Alongside this, I endured sustained mental and emotional abuse. This included intimidation, manipulation, and behaviour intended to demean, control, and silence me. The combination of sexual, physical, and psychological abuse created an environment of constant fear and distress. At the time of these incidents, I did not feel safe to report what was happening. I was isolated, intimidated, and unsure whether I would be believed. The setting in which the abuse occurred made it especially difficult to seek help, as the perpetrator was a trusted staff member and authority figure within the residence. This contributed to my feelings of helplessness and confusion and allowed the abuse to continue over a period of time. The impact of these experiences has been significant and long-lasting. I have suffered emotional trauma, ongoing psychological distress, and difficulty trusting others, particularly those in positions of authority. The abuse has affected my mental health, my sense of safety, and my overall quality of life. These effects did not end when I left Creagdhu and continue to influence my daily life.
I am making this statement to ensure that what happened to me is formally acknowledged and taken seriously. No individual should be subjected to abuse while in care, and those responsible must be held accountable for their actions. I hope that by speaking out, I can contribute to preventing similar harm to others and to ensuring greater safeguarding and protection for vulnerable individuals in care settings.
