Since then, I have tried to suppress many of the memories from my time in care. The experiences were overwhelming, and I didn’t know how to cope with them. I began smoking a lot of cannabis because it helped me forget and numb some of the emotions connected to what happened. The staff behaved in ways that were cruel and completely unacceptable, and the memories of what happened there have stayed with me throughout my life.
One of the most distressing things I witnessed was what was done to my sister. I watched as staff pulled her pants down and spanked her. Seeing that happen to someone I loved so deeply was devastating, and to this day it fills me with anger. My sister has since passed away, and I carry the weight of those memories knowing she is no longer here to speak for herself. It feels even more important, therefore, that her experience is acknowledged.
We were both subjected to force feeding, which was a deeply unpleasant and upsetting ordeal. I particularly remember an incident involving fish. It had been thrown under the table, and I was accused of doing it. I told them it was not me, but I was not believed, and I was force fed it regardless. We were also force fed tomatoes. The lasting impact of this has never left me — to this day I cannot eat tomatoes. What should have been a simple food has become something I associate entirely with that place and the way I was treated there.
The punishments did not stop there. If staff heard us talking amongst ourselves, we were made to stand at the end of our beds in our nightgowns. Standing there in the cold was both physically uncomfortable and deeply humiliating. We were children, and we were being treated as though we had no rights and no voice.
We were also denied access to the tuck shop, and when money was sent to us by our loved ones, we were told we were not allowed it. That money, sent by people who cared about us, was kept from us without explanation or justification. It felt like yet another way of stripping away any small comfort or sense of normality we might have had.
On top of everything else, we were made to go on extremely long walks that were simply too demanding for children of our age and size. We were forced to walk up massive hills, and I remember falling to my hands and knees from sheer exhaustion. I was so tired I could barely move, and yet the staff showed no concern whatsoever. They did not stop. They did not care. As if that were not enough, they would make us sing songs during these walks, even when I was so small and so worn out that I could barely put one foot in front of the other. It was humiliating and completely without compassion.
However, above everything else I experienced, it is what I witnessed happening to my sister that has affected me the most. That has never left me, and I know it never will. She is gone now, and I am left carrying those memories alone. We were made to do loads of manual work, and it felt relentless. I was barely ever in the classrooms — instead, I was almost always outside working in the gardens, doing heavy physical labour. The work was back‑breaking. It felt like slave labour at times, working all hours of the day, sweating and grafting for people who didn’t seem to care about us at all. There was no sense of support or encouragement, just constant pressure and exhaustion.

There were also quite a few times when the staff physically assaulted me. They would slap me, hit me, and beat me up. It wasn’t just occasional — it happened enough that I lived in fear of when it might happen again. The staff were abusive in the way they spoke to us as well. They would shout at us, call us names, and treat us with complete disrespect. Their behaviour made me feel small, scared, and completely powerless.

The combination of the physical labour and the physical abuse made the whole experience incredibly traumatic. I was only young, and instead of being cared for or supported, I was being pushed, shouted at, and hurt by the very people who were supposed to look after me. It left me feeling isolated and overwhelmed, and it has had a lasting impact on my mental and emotional wellbeing.

I was belittled on a regular basis, and the way I was treated had a lasting impact on my sense of self-worth that I still carry with me today.
When I was deemed to have misbehaved, the punishment was excessive and humiliating. I was forced to do all of the dishes for weeks at a time. Rather than being a fair or proportionate consequence, it felt like a way of degrading me and making me feel inferior to those around me.
I was also kept in my pyjamas and confined to the home. Most disturbingly, I was taken out of school entirely. I was only given approximately two hours of school work, which was completely inadequate for a child of my age. Education is something every child deserves, and having that taken away from me has had consequences that have followed me into adulthood. I was not given the same opportunities as other children, and that was not my choice.
I also recall a member of staff rolling me up in a carpet. Whatever the intention behind it, it was not something a child should ever be subjected to, and it left an impression on me.
On top of this, I was isolated in the corridor, made to stand there alone and forbidden from speaking to anyone. For a child who was already confined to the home and cut off from school and social interaction, this level of isolation was deeply damaging. For approximately three years, the home was essentially my entire world. I was not permitted to socialise in any meaningful way, which left me feeling completely alone and cut off from any sense of normal childhood life.
There were times when the situation became so unbearable that I ran away. On one occasion, I managed to travel by train to Aberdeen and then on to Dundee. The train was delayed, and we ended up in a taxi, but we had to flee from it as well. During all of this we lost our bags, which meant we lost our clothes too. The weather was terrible — it was raining heavily and bitterly cold, and we were soaked through and freezing. It was a desperate situation for a child to be in. When I was eventually returned to the home, instead of being shown any care or concern, I was punished further by not being allowed to change out of my wet clothes. That memory has never left me.
The cumulative effect of everything I experienced in that home has been significant and long-lasting. I now suffer from severe anxiety, depression, and difficulties with my mental health. I have no doubt that what I was put through during those years contributed greatly to the struggles I face today. I deserved to be cared for, protected, and supported. Instead, I was punished, isolated, and made to feel that I did not matter.","setting_2_statement":"Of all the places I have been, this is the one that has had the single biggest impact on my life. What happened here, and what failed to happen here, set the course for years of hardship that I am still living with today.
The support I received was non-existent. I was essentially left to fend for myself. We were given £28 per week to live off, which was simply not enough to cover basic needs. When that money ran out and I found myself without food, I did what any person in that situation would do — I asked for help. Rather than being supported, I was punished for it. Because I asked for food, I was kicked out. That decision changed the entire direction of my life, and I do not say that lightly.
My social worker failed me completely. At the point when I needed someone to step in and ensure I was safe and supported, nobody did. As a result of that failure, I ended up on the streets. I lived that way for eleven years. Eleven years of having no stability, no safety, and no place to call home. That is not something anyone should have to endure, and it was a direct consequence of the lack of care and intervention I received at a time when I was most vulnerable.
Eventually I was given a flat, and for a brief period it seemed as though things might begin to improve. However, I was evicted from that too, as the bills were not being paid on my behalf as they should have been. Once again, through no real fault of my own, I found myself without a roof over my head. I ended up living in a tent. The sense of hopelessness during that time is something that is very difficult to put into words.
Throughout all of this, I have never been able to settle anywhere. I have carried a deep and persistent sense of isolation for as long as I can remember, and that feeling has not left me even now. I am back in Scotland at present, but I still feel profoundly isolated. Life continues to be a daily struggle.
To make matters worse, years of carrying bags and living without stability has taken a serious physical toll on my body. I now have two slipped discs, which cause me considerable pain and limit what I am able to do. I was supposed to have surgery to address this, but that was cancelled. The physical damage I have sustained is, in many ways, a direct result of the years I spent without a home, without support, and without anyone ensuring that my basic needs were being met.
I deserved better than what I was given. I deserved to be supported, not discarded. The staff were horrible to me from the beginning. They would bully me, speak to me aggressively, and make me feel like I didn’t matter. Instead of being supported or guided, I felt targeted and intimidated every single day. There were times when staff behaved in ways that were completely inappropriate and sexual towards some of the children, including me at times. Being so young, I didn’t fully understand what was happening, but I knew it wasn’t right. It left me feeling unsafe, confused, and constantly on edge.

The neglect was just as damaging. We weren’t treated with any care or respect, and there was no sense of protection. Staff would restrain us for no real reason, using force when it wasn’t needed. These restraints often turned into physical assaults, and I remember feeling terrified and powerless. Instead of helping us or trying to understand us, they used fear and violence to control us.

During my time there, one of the older boys, who was around 17, took advantage of me and sexually assaulted me. I was scared and didn’t know how to process what had happened, but I did report it to staff. It was noted, but nothing ever really changed, and I didn’t feel any safer afterwards. I was still just a child, trying to survive in an environment where adults abused their authority and other young people were also struggling and acting out of their own trauma.

Looking back, I realise how vulnerable I was and how much these experiences affected me. I didn’t know right from wrong at that age, and I had no one to guide me or protect me. The environment was extremely strict, We was locked in the house twice a week and we was not allowed to go out after school and we couldn't go out at all then. It was a horrible time because when we was locked in then all the girls would start being mean to each other, its like the staff was encouraging it.  and I never felt safe or supported there. The teachers would shout and scream at us regularly, and the atmosphere felt tense and intimidating almost every day. Looking back, I would say that the main harm I experienced there was mental and emotional abuse.

I am quite dark‑skinned, and during my time at St. Margaret’s I was bullied constantly because of the colour of my skin. Other children would make cruel comments, mock me, and call me racial slurs. It happened so often that it became part of my daily life, and it had a deep and lasting impact on my mental health. The words they used made me feel ashamed of who I was, and it took away a lot of my confidence at a young age.

What made it even worse was that the teachers turned a blind eye to it. They saw what was happening, or at least heard it, but they allowed it to continue. There was no intervention, no support, and no attempt to protect me from the racism I was facing. Their silence made me feel even more isolated, as if my pain didn’t matter.

Quite often, I would miss meals because I didn’t want to sit with the others. The bullying made me feel too anxious and uncomfortable to be in the dining hall, so I would go without eating rather than face more abuse. I was a vulnerable child, and I needed adults to step in and help me, but instead I felt neglected and ignored.

I felt extremely emotional and scared. My mum was heartbroken, and none of us were expecting this to happen. It came as a complete shock. I remember being dragged out of my bed by a social worker. I was confused, frightened, and didn’t understand what was going on. I was then taken to Cardross while I was still heartbroken and overwhelmed with emotion. That experience of being taken so suddenly and forcefully has stayed with me ever since and has had a lasting impact on how I feel about safety and trust.

On arrival, there was no empathy shown towards me by the care home staff. There was no understanding, no comfort, and no explanation as to why I was there. I felt completely alone, confused, and abandoned. After a few days, I realised that I was not getting out of there. When that reality set in, I felt like I was in hell. I felt trapped, hopeless, and powerless, with no control over what was happening to me.

While I was there, we were allowed and made to have sex with other young girls our own age. The night shift staff would make this happen and would wait, and after this they would go in and sexually assault the girls. This was deeply traumatic and completely inappropriate, and it has had a severe and lasting effect on me. The staff were extremely violent and feral in their behaviour. They would beat me black and blue regularly. Every time I tried to stand up for myself or rebel, they would take me outside and beat me. They would punch and kick me repeatedly.

They would also come into my bedroom and beat me there. I was punched, kicked, and dragged around the room, left defenceless and terrified. This happened regularly, and I was constantly living in fear. There was also a lot of fighting between the children, and the staff allowed this to happen, which made the environment even more dangerous and unstable. This constant exposure to violence had a serious impact on my mental health and how I developed as a young person.

The food they provided was cold, rotten, and hard. They knew we wouldn’t like it, but we were given no other option. We were basically force-fed because if we didn’t eat it, we got nothing else. This made me feel completely dehumanised and powerless.

They would restrain us in very painful ways, often without reason. They also segregated us from everyone else, isolating us for long periods. During the night, they would come in and beat us. We were treated like human punch bags. I was often secluded and locked in my bedroom for long periods during the day. There was no proper education provided. Because of this, I had to repeat my second year of school. This has had a lasting impact on my education, my confidence, and my opportunities in life, and it is something that has followed me into adulthood.

Every morning, the staff would drag us into cold showers and stand there watching us shower. This was extremely degrading, humiliating, and distressing. I also witnessed girls being sexually assaulted by a staff member while I was there. These are things that no child should ever have to witness, and they have stayed with me ever since.

Over the years, I have tried to block out as much of this as I can, but there are things I will never forget. The trauma I experienced has had a very serious and long-lasting impact on my life. From a young age, I turned to alcohol to try and cope and block out what I had been through. I became an alcoholic as a result of these experiences. These events are on my mind every single day, and even recounting them now brings up a great deal of emotion. However, it is important that what happened to me is heard and properly recorded.
It started during what should have been an entirely innocent situation. I was having a pillow fight with my friends — the kind of thing children do — when a member of staff named Tam Young intervened in a way that was violent and completely disproportionate. He put me flat on the floor, and every time I moved he would bend my arms and wrists back with such force that it almost broke them. The physical pain was severe, but it was the shock of it — the fact that a grown adult was doing this to a child — that has stayed with me. From that point on, I have had to take medication, including antipsychotic medication, and that has been a part of my life ever since.
The restraints did not stop there. I was restrained on a regular basis, often for the most minor and trivial things. Something as innocent as laughing, or failing to make my bed, could result in being physically restrained. It was terrifying, and I would cry during these incidents. Rather than being comforted, my distress seemed to make no difference to those who were supposed to be caring for me.
Alongside the physical treatment, I was subjected to ongoing humiliation and isolation. I was sent to dormitories as punishment, made to stand in corners, and humiliated in front of the other children. Being degraded in that way, in front of my peers, was deeply damaging to my sense of dignity and self-worth. I was made to feel like I was nothing.
There was also sexual abuse taking place towards other children in that environment, which I was aware of. This added another layer of fear and distress to an already unbearable situation.
I also need to disclose something that I have carried with me for a very long time, and which is deeply painful to put into words. During one of the occasions when Tam Young had me in a physical hold, he squeezed my genital area. I have thought about that moment countless times over the years, and I still struggle to fully process what was done to me. It was a violation, and it should never have happened.
What I experienced in that home left a lasting mark on every part of my life — my mental health, my physical health, and my sense of safety in the world. A member of staff named Mr Donald McAlley sexually abused me. I woke up to find him in bed with me, and he was abusing me in my sleep. This was not an isolated incident involving only myself — he was doing this to a number of girls in the home. I later came to understand that he had also been sacked from another home prior to this, where he had been sexually assaulting boys in his care. He was a known danger, and yet he was in a position where he had access to vulnerable children.
I want it on record that Mr McAlley was charged in court for the abuse he carried out against me. However, before he could be sentenced, he died of a heart attack. He never faced the consequences of what he did. I have had to live with what happened to me every day, while he was never held fully accountable, and that is something I find very difficult to accept.
Mr McAlley also took us on holiday, which may have appeared on the surface to be a kind gesture, but during that trip he crashed the car while drunk, and we ended up in a ditch. We were children in the care of someone who was supposed to keep us safe, and instead our lives were put at risk.
The broader culture within that home was one of cruelty and neglect. All of the carers were unkind, and I have since heard that following my time there, others were also found to have been mistreating the children in their care. That does not surprise me in the least. What I witnessed and experienced myself was indicative of an environment where the abuse of children was tolerated.
As a form of so-called treatment, I was isolated and placed in a silent room — what I can only describe as a silent cell. Being confined in that way, cut off from any human contact or comfort, was deeply distressing and did nothing to help me. It only added to the trauma I was already experiencing.
I ran away frequently. The home was not a safe place for me, and running felt like the only way to escape. Each time I was brought back by staff and police, and each time I returned to the same environment that had driven me to run in the first place.
The impact of everything I experienced in that home has been profound and long-lasting. I have struggled significantly with my mental health as a direct result of what was done to me. I have self-harmed, and that has taken a serious toll on my physical health and wellbeing. I have drunk heavily as a way of trying to cope with what I carry inside me. There have also been times when I have stolen from shops, not out of greed, but because my mind has been so overwhelmed and fractured by everything I have been through that I have not always been able to function as I would wish to. I am not proud of these things, but they are the reality of what living with this level of trauma looks like, and they are a direct consequence of what was done to me as a child.
I deserved to be protected. I deserved to be safe. Instead, the very people who were responsible for my care caused me harm that I am still trying to recover from today.","supporting_documents":"collecting","setting_1_persons_involved":null}

As soon as I arrived, they stripped me completely naked, and the staff stood there laughing at me. It was humiliating and frightening, and it set the tone for everything that followed. The staff would beat me, grab me, and throw me around. They would kick and punch me, and they seemed to find it amusing. The way they treated me was degrading, and it made me feel completely powerless.

They would also point at my private areas and laugh, which made the whole experience even more humiliating. I remember feeling exposed, ashamed, and terrified. There was no sense of safety or dignity. The time I spent there was filled with fear, and I never knew what was going to happen next. The staff were supposed to protect us, but instead they were the ones causing the harm.

It wasn’t just me who was treated this way. I saw many other boys being beaten and mistreated as well. It felt like the staff were looking for excuses to hurt us, almost as if they were provoking situations just so they could justify their behaviour. Watching others go through the same abuse made me feel even more hopeless, because it showed that none of us were safe.

we had a cigarette allowance and they would never give them us and even hit us if we did ask. During my time there I also had no money and had to do sexual favrs to make some money.

The constant fear, the humiliation, and the physical abuse have all had a lasting effect on my mental health. Even now, I still carry the emotional impact of what happened there. The way I was treated has stayed with me throughout my life, and it has shaped how I see myself and how I cope with difficult situations. My time there was one of the most traumatic experiences I have ever lived through, and it is something I will never forget. I later in life suffer from Depression and Epilespy and the doctors say that the epilespy is caused from so many hits to the head.","setting_2_statement":"During my time in Longriggend, I was only 15 years old, and it was absolutely awful. From the moment I arrived, the environment felt harsh, frightening, and completely unsafe. They would lock us in, and the staff were extremely abusive towards us. We weren’t even allowed to sit on our beds. Any small thing we did, or even just existing in the space, seemed to be treated as an excuse for punishment.

Every opportunity they had, they would come into the cells and beat us. I was physically assaulted more or less every single day while I was inside Longriggend. The fear of what might happen next was constant. They inspected the cells daily, and if there was even the slightest thing out of place, they would beat us for it. Sometimes they would deliberately mess up the room themselves and then punish us for it being “wrong.” It felt like there was no way to avoid the violence — no matter what we did, we were targeted.

I remember one man in particular, Jimmy Hall. He was a big man, and the way he treated us was terrifying. He was extremely aggressive, and he would beat us badly. His presence alone made me anxious, because I knew what he was capable of. Being so young and having to face that kind of behaviour from an adult in authority left a deep emotional mark on me.

The whole experience changed me. Since then, I have always been more reserved and timid. The constant fear, the physical abuse, and the feeling of having no control over my own safety have stayed with me throughout my life.
